PROJECT IN PRELIM (EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY II)TTH 1:00 TO 2:30

INNOVATION OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
IN PHILIPPINE SETTING

From the very bulky computers of the 1960s to the very compact gadgets of the present time, technology had been continuously developing in the past decades, and had played great roles in many people’s daily tasks. Starting with the conception of the personal computer, people’s work became faster, and communication with other people became much easier.

Furthermore, in the recent years, the use of computers and related technology in education has been proven beneficial to teachers and students, and effective both cost-wise and education-wise. The use of technology in education has significantly aided students in performing their school-related tasks.

IN ELEMENTARY LEVEL:

Geographic fragmentation makes access to education a challenge in the Philippines. Globe’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program seeks to transform the educational ecosystem by integrating its outliers through the technology and innovation intrinsic to its business.

Globe's primary CSR advocacy is to provide ICT access to as many students, teachers, school administrators, and other education stakeholders in the Philippine public school system as possible, regardless of their location, their age, or their level of competency.

A Philippine-made mathematics courseware for tablet users is nominated to this year’s Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF) Asia Awards which gives recognition to the important contributions of innovation in giving creative solutions to social and economic development issues of the Asia Pacific Region.

A joint project of the Department of Science and Technology’s Science Education Institute (SEI) and the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), the project is nominated under the Innovations on Learning and Localization category.

IN SECONDARY LEVEL:

Instead of defining ICT for education in terms of technology literacy or information literacy, the concept of “ICT capability” should be understood and considered as a definition of ICT for education.ICT capability involves technical and cognitive proficiency to access, use, develop, create, and communicate information appropriately using ICT tools. Learners demonstrate this capability by applying technology purposefully to solve problems, analyze and exchange information, develop ideas, create models, and control devices. They are discriminating in their use of information and ICT tools, and systematic in reviewing and evaluating the contribution that ICT can make to their work as it progresses. ICT capability is much broader than acquiring a set of technical competencies in software applications.

IN TERTIARY LEVEL:

Ateneo de Manila University has been connected to the Department of Science and Technology - Advanced Science and Technology Institute's Philippine Research, Education and Government Information Network (PREGINET) since 2009 as a partner educational institution.

Recently, there has been an influx of in-campus student-led events availing of digital services, aided by the Convergent Platforms and Network Media Laboratory (link to iptv.ateneo.edu) of the university which advocate for digital content sharing through PREGINET's streaming platform.
